Is QuarkXPress 2018 available on the Mac App Store?
Yes, since October 11, 2018, QuarkXPress is available via Mac App Store, called “QuarkXPress 2018 Pro”. It’s slightly different to the edition sold outside of the Mac App Store; most notable is that this version is not upgradeable to the next major version of QuarkXPress Pro once available. Only QuarkXPress 2018 updates are included with your purchase.
Are there any differences in features between the standard edition of QuarkXPress 2018 and the Mac App Store version?
We are trying to keep feature parity between the Mac App Store edition and the one that we sell direct and through resellers, however Apple's Mac App Store submission guidelines have required some feature changes. Currently we have managed to keep any feature differences to a minimum:
See the full version comparison here.
Why do I need to define at least one workfolder before I start and what kind of information is QuarkXPress accessing?
The Mac App Store implements a “sandbox” concept, which means that an application cannot access data outside folders that you allow it to see. By defining one or more workfolders, you allow QuarkXPress to access all files in the workfolder (including all sub folders). If you don’t do that, QuarkXPress e.g. cannot see images imported that are outside the workfolder and will show them as “missing”, though you will see it in Finder.
Therefore we recommend to define your user folder as a “workfolder” and all external drives (network drives, USB drives etc.) as workfolders.
What if I have already bought the App Store edition but need the features that aren't available in it?
In this case you should purchase QuarkXPress 2018 instead; either directly from Quark or one of our authorized resellers.
Can I upgrade the Mac App Store version once a new major release is available?
No. QuarkXPress Pro in the App Store is a non-upgradable edition. This is primarily a function of how the Mac App Store works. However minor ("point") updates are free of charge and can be installed through the App Store. Major ("whole version number") versions in the Mac App Store are paid new versions of the app which you will need to purchase separately. The significantly lower price of QuarkXPress Pro in the App Store reflects this.
Can I install QuarkXPress Pro on my MacBook and Desktop Mac and use it on one machine at a time?
Yes, you can, as long as you use the same Apple ID.
*Can I still create ebooks in the Kindle format although that's not available as an export option in QuarkXPress Pro?
Yes, of course, you can export for Kindle, there just isn't a direct 'Kindle export' output. That would require QuarkXPress calling the external KindleGen app, which is prevented by the sandboxing of the Mac App Store.
However, you can export a fully compliant ePub and upload that straight to Amazon without difficulty.
If (for personal distribution, perhaps) you wanted to convert into the Kindle format yourself, you would need to use KindleGen as a separate app, which is a free download by Amazon. It's an extra step, export to ePub and then convert to Kindle, but doesn't limit what you can do with the software.
Can I try your software before I buy it even if I buy the Mac App Store version?
Yes, a fully functional trial version of QuarkXPress 2018 can be downloaded directly from our website. The trial version gives you the opportunity to confirm that the software does what you want it to do it, and to compare it to software from other manufacturers. Once you have made a purchase decision you decide where to buy. The trial installation however can be easily be unlocked once you purchase from Quark directly using a serial number and validation code so in this case don’t need to download install the app again. Note that the Trial version functionality will be different to the functionality in QuarkXPress Pro as described in these FAQs above.
What support comes with the Mac App Store edition?
The Mac App Store edition includes email support. If you experience issues, please write to support@quark.com.
Are Mac App Store Pro customers eligible to receive the special font bundle offer?
Unfortunately not. The Mac App Store edition of QuarkXPress cannot be combined with other offers available outside of the Mac App Store.
